Description of Organization: Historic Greeley Inc., is a 501 (c)3 nonprofit in Greeley, Colorado, dedicated to the preservation of Greeley’s historic structures. Historic Greeley pursues its mission of preservation advocacy through educational outreach, procuring grants and tax credits, engaging with local government, and hands-on preservation projects. The organization is steered by a volunteer board with backgrounds in law, business, academia, and construction. Position summary: The Archives Intern will catalog items and documents in the Southard-Gillespie House, with the goal of identifying relevant items and building an exhibit and informational tour about the Southard-Gillespie Family, architect Bessie Smith, and the home itself.

Each ~3.5-month (roughly semester-long) internship will involve a specific focus from one of three areas depending on the interests and expertise of the applicant. Applicants may choose a focus from the following tracks:

  • The building

  • The family

  • The collection

Regardless of the chosen track, the Archives Intern will collect oral history, organize and catalog artifacts within the Southard-Gillespie House, and distill findings into written reports that can be used to generate exhibition spaces and guided tours in the house. While some of the work must be conducted on-site at the Southard-Gillespie house, the hours spent on-site can be flexible depending on the needs of the student’s schedule. Additionally, work like transcribing tapes, collecting oral history, and generating exhibition and cataloging plans can happen remotely. An exact schedule for the semester will be determined by the Historic Greeley president (Dr. Julia Richard, supervisor of the role), and the applicant.

Ideal candidates will have a background in safely handling delicate art and artifacts, identifying artifacts from a wide range of periods and styles, and a background in historical research. Interest in local history is a plus.

Minimum qualifications:

  • 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher.

  • Completion of ANTH240, Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies at a B or higher.

  • A valid driver’s license with the ability to travel to Greeley when needed.

  • Expertise using basic computer software like Microsoft Office.

Essential job duties:

Duty/Responsibility: Collecting oral history and transcribing tapes

  • Using David Gillespie tapes to record oral history and assist in identifying items.

  • Using Greeley Museum archives to understand history and develop record of your chosen track.

  • Possible phone interviews to further an understanding of your track.

  • Independent research of your track.

Percentage of time (approximate): 40

Duty/Responsibility: Cataloging artifacts

  • Assessing items in the Southard-Gillespie House for their relevance and building item catalog.

  • Percentage of time (approximate): 35

  • Duty/Responsibility: Written report to build exhibition and tour

Percentage of time (approximate): 20

  • Develop materials (wall copy, explainer pieces, layout plans) that can be used to develop an exhibition within the house of the house, family, and architect history, using the items you have cataloged.

  • Duty/Responsibility: Bi-monthly check-in/report with HGI president

Percentage of time (approximate): 5

One-hour check-in twice a month with HGI president, Dr. Julia Richard—can be completed in Greeley, Fort Collins, or virtually.
